It’s Fall!

Hello, my sweet friends. I hope you’re excited about fall as we are around here. G has been trying to sneak out of the house every morning bundled up in the cold weather clothes we bought for back to school (in August!) Then, I when I pick him up in the afternoon, he’s dragging the jacket behind him and sweating like a racehorse. And, sure as I’m sitting here, when it finally does get cold we’ll arguing over the fact that adding a sweatshirt does not make shorts appropriate winter apparel . . . EVEN in South Carolina!

Anyway, here we sit patiently waiting for leaves to start changing into crisp shades of red and gold. How’s the weather where you are? Still frustratingly warm? Well, at least we can enjoy the last straggling summer flowers before the cooler weather sweeps them away.

As always, since today is the first day of the season, I’m sharing a collection of free digital wallpapers. If you’re new to White Tulips you can look back and download wallpapers and other printables from past seasons here!

Don’t you just love sunflowers? This one comes from a painting that I did a while back from a photo that a friend’s young son had taken.

Along with this season’s wallpaper download, I’ve also included a Facebook cover pic as well!

Simple Autumn Wreath

I hope you enjoyed last week’s Fall Home Tours. It was really exciting to be part of such a great group. The best part was coming up with quickie decor projects. Sometimes, when you’re photographing a room you can see holes in your design that you might not normally see. When I started putting the kitchen together I realized how empty the door looked and decided to whip up a quick wreath to tie everything together. Luckily, I had a wreath form on hand.

If you saw my home tour post you know that I promised to share how I put together the wreath. To be honest, the original wreath was whipped up much more quickly and much less permanently. But, I really liked the texture and look once we lived with it for a few days. So, I decided to pull it apart and make it more permanent for the tutorial.

As promised, here’s my warm and cozy simple autumn wreath.

Simple Fall Wreath - White Tulip Designs

Start with a Styrofoam wreath form, a long-sleeved sweater, and a strip of light-weight cotton fabric. You’ll also need some basic sewing supplies. Don’t worry, as long as you can sew on a button, you’ll be fine.

Fall Wreath - White Tulip Designs - 2

Cut the sleeves from the sweater, preferably along the shoulder seam. Then open the sleeve along the bottom, also along the seam.

Fall Wreath - White Tulip Designs - 4

Start at one end attaching the sleeve to you wreath form by “whip stitching” the seam back together. Don’t worry if it wiggles a bit we’re going to straighten it up before we hang it.

Fall Wreath - White Tulip Designs - 5

One sleeve down, one to go! I did straighten the first one a bit before starting the next one, going in the opposite direction.

Fall Wreath - White Tulip Designs - 6

Now that you’ve sewn both seems, straighten and align them so that they won’t show from the front. Use stick pins to hold everything in place and overlap the sleeves on either end.

Fall Wreath - White Tulip Designs - 9

Using fabric that was left over from my checkered bunting (over the kitchen sink) I put together a bow that didn’t require any sewing. I didn’t want to cut up the fabric either so that worked out really well. The fabric was about 18 inches wide and 40 inches long.

Fall Wreath - White Tulip Designs - 3

Laying the fabric out horizontally, I started by folding the top and bottom in on each other. Then I folded the left and right sides into the middle, tucking in the edges to make a wedge. This keeps the rough edges from showing when you tie everything together.

Fall Wreath - White Tulip Designs - 8

Use a scrap piece of fabric to tie your bow in the center then use the “tails” to pin the bow to your wreath form.

And now you have a quick and simple autumn wreath! Full disclosure, I’m thinking of taking of the bow and adding some flowers! I’ll let you know how it turns out!

LOL! I feel the same way. After I put together this and the up-cycled pumpkin project my hubby gets nervous about me rummaging in the closet.

There won’t be old sweater that is safe in my house!

I LOVE this with the sweater. Super fun and easy too. Thanks for sharing at #HomeMattersParty

2015 Fall Home Tour

2015 Fall Home Tour - White Tulip Designs

A few weeks ago I was invited, by Brenda with Cozy Little House, to participate in her 2015 Blogger Fall Home Tour! I’ve been super excited about joining in since this is my first home tour but also because this is a pretty amazing group of bloggers. If you’ve been following along, then you’ve seen the entries and their fantastic homes. I’ve been over-thinking the process of putting together a home tour since last spring and this is the perfect opportunity to jump in feet first.  (Don’t forget to download the free printable at the end of the tour!)

Let’s get things started:

My Mother-in Law gave me this beautiful sewing cabinet a few years back and I love having it in this little corner to serve drinks from when we’re having a party.

The sign works into my “pumpkin patch” display pretty well, don’t you think?

She’s such a ham! You wouldn’t believe how many pics I had to edit out because of a random tail or ears sneaking into the shot.  .  .  . Who me?

The hydrangeas had fairly sad little blooms this year but a lot of them. I love being able to have flowers around  the house.

You wouldn’t believe what I made this wreath out of, if I told you! Hmmm, I think I hear a tutorial coming!

Look who popped in to say hi! She loves watching me in the kitchen and most of the time she stays right there!

Such happy coincidence that black works so well into my kitchen! When I start adding in the Halloween touches they will fit perfectly!

This little chair was the first piece of furniture I ever bought for myself. I paid $15 for it when I was 22 years old. It was a ratty mess when I got and my parents had it re-covered for my birthday that year.  I’ve been thinking about updating it soon but right now it fits so well into my fall decor!

Love a gallery wall! Even a little one is fun to put together. I’ll be sharing the tutorial for this little leaf garland next week but the text print (lower left side) is your to download, free! Link is provided at the end of the tour.

Thank you Stacey! I’m so glad you stopped by. You’re exactly right about cats. I think they’re just a bit more selective about their people, LOL!

It’s great to meet you, I’ll be hoping over to check our your blog today as well.

I absolutely LOVE your home! Especially your gorgeous farmhouse kitchen, complete with a posing kitty. (She poses like my dog Abi does. Manages to get in nearly every shot.) You have such a wonderful style, and I’m so glad you joined Tweak It so I could know you. I’ll be following along now!

You have a wonderful home! I love seeing that your kitty keeps you company all around the house. Ours does the same thing and it’s funny to me that people think cats are so unsocial. The shelves and the sign in your kitchen are adorable. Pinning those.

Honestly, I’m not sure that I’ve ever landed on your blog. Glad to find you today.

Great Autumn Wreaths

After a little hiatus I’m so excited to tell you what I’ve been up to around here! To start with we’ve been planning our next major house project. Tearing down walls and building something wonderful is what I dream about. But, I’m not sure I’m quite ready for weeks of endless sheet-rock dust, bleck!

For now, I’ve been getting ready for a home tour this week (more on that later!) and busting out the fall decorations. It’s so strange to be putting out pumpkins, leaves, and other autumn inspiration when it’s still so darn warm outside.  Hopefully the weather outside will soon catch up to the decorations inside! I’ve never really decorated for fall before but I’m starting small and then I can add in the Halloween touches in a few weeks. Then, when I take away the Halloween, I can add in some Thanksgiving pieces. Well, that’s the plan at least.

Wreath Cover

What better way to welcome in the change of seasons that with a sweet new wreath1 I’ve rounded up a collection of my favorites. I’ve included DIY’s, as well as wreaths you can purchase! Enjoy!
