Butterfly Quote

Here we go, it’s a new year and time for a fresh start.  I started work on carving out a little office space in our living room last spring but that sort of came to a stop when the kitchen started.  Living with two boys, I really wanted to make it a more feminine spot as well so I set to work on pulling together and working on new art pieces to hang above the desk area. I found this quote and thought it would be such a nice inspiration to have framed.

I created the layout using an watercolor butterfly and printed it with royal blue text. Then I went over the lettering using a gold metallic fine point Sharpie marker.

Gold Cocktail Tray

Happy New Year! I won’t be posting tomorrow but in honor of tonight I thought I’d share a sweet little project I actually did in early fall.

Gold Tray Project

I found a cheap and, may I say, ugly little metal tray in a local thrift store. When I saw it I had one of those, “aw it reminds me of my childhood” moments but having grown up in the 70’s those are usually followed by - “Ew, I don’t want that in my house!” But it was $1!!! So I bought it and figure I’d work out what to do with it at home. I do that WAY too much but this time it worked out.

I already had this stencil on hand so I decided to use it to help spruce up my little find.  I started by painting the tray an ivory color using wall paint we had left over from an old project. Once it was painted (it took 1 coat of primer and 2 coats of paint) I let it dry and cure overnight.  Then, I measured and marked for stripes then taped them out using painter’s tape.

I painted “gold” stripes using craft paint -  FolkArt Metallic Champagne,  making sure to keep it really smooth and bring the stripe over the edge of the rim.  I let the stripes dry overnight before centering the Fleur-de-lis stencil and tracing an outline to fill in. I filled it in with a mix of the colors but FolkArt Pure Gold is closest to the color I ended up with.

And, voila! Here she is . . .

I photographed under a light so the gold would really show. The Fleur-de-lis isn’t quite as orange-y as it looks in this pic, it’s a bit more of an antique gold.  Now to find a home for him. For now, I’ll top him with a few festive cocktails for tonight and wait for the clock to strike midnight!

Chalkboard Organizing Center

Here’s a bit of inspiration to get you organized for the new year.

This is one of my favorite parts of my kitchen but the funniest thing for me is that men think it’s the most genius thing ever!  Obviously my plumber isn’t as addicted to Pinterest as I am! LOL!  We had a bit of a problem with dumping lunchboxes, purses, book bags, mail, you name it on the counter and I new I needed to create an alternative “dumping” ground in the new kitchen design.

Chalkboard

When my contractor was building the wall, I had him add a brace behind where the hooks would be hung to be sure that it would stand up to heavy book bags, purses, jackets, etc. without any problem. I painted out the entire wall using Rust-Oleum chalkboard paint with 2 coats. Then I seasoned it by dragging a large piece of white chalk over the entire surface before erasing it. Since the board is so large, I actually did this twice to be sure I covered everything.

Chalkboard rail and hooks

After I was happy that I had completely seasoned the surface and erased it completely and washed it with a wet rag then, my contractor put up the Ikea shelf and hooks.  As he put up the trim throughout the kitchen contractor Tim and I discussed how we could finish the chalkboard wall. He came up with the plan to frame it above the baseboard and below the crown moulding, just like a picture.

I love it! It’s so fun and it keeps us from having a counter top covered with “stuff” at the end of the day. The ledge is a great place to put things that need to be remembered, coupons, etc.  And, we can leave notes and lists for the day as well.

Chalkboard finished

FYI - when it’s time for a change, all I need to do is remove the frame trim, prime, and paint! It will be quite some time before I’m ready for that.

I will be taking a bit of a break for about a week so I thought I’d leave you with some lovely inspiration for your Christmas dinner table. With the weather forecast it seems that there will be quite a lot of white Christmases this year.

Favorite-Things-1

This time of year Hubby and G get a little over-loaded with my sappy-Christmas “spirit”. Or, considering I start to listening to Christmas music around early-November, you may say it’s a full-on possession.

Any-who, I’m on a mission to add more personal and fun things to our walls all year round so I created this to add to our dining room and I thought I’d share it here. (It’s set up to print 8×10.)
